Drumstick Grips: Traditional & Matched
Matched vs. Traditional Grip – Which One’s Right for You?
When it comes to holding drumsticks, there are two main approaches: matched grip and traditional grip. Each has its own feel, history, and vibe on the kit.
Matched Grip – The Modern Standard
This is the grip most drummers start with. Both hands hold the sticks the same way, which feels natural and balanced.
You’ll see it in three flavors:
-
German grip: Palms down, great for power.
-
French grip: Thumbs on top, awesome for speed and finger control.
-
American grip: A comfy mix of the two.
Why drummers love it:
-
Easy to pick up.
-
Perfect for rock, pop, metal, funk—basically most modern styles.
-
Works just as well on electronic kits.
Traditional Grip – The Old School Cool
This one looks a little fancy: the right hand holds like matched, but the left hand cradles the stick diagonally.
It comes from marching band days, when snares were tilted on a sling. Jazz drummers later adopted it, and it’s stuck around as a classic technique.
Why it’s cool:
-
Great for ghost notes and subtle dynamics.
-
Gives off that slick “jazz drummer” vibe.
-
Harder to learn at first, especially if you’re right-handed.

So… Which Grip Should You Use?
-
Just starting out and want to rock? → Matched grip.
-
Love jazz or want to dive deeper into technique? → Learn traditional too.
-
Want maximum freedom? → Know both and switch when you need to.
